Important stuff about mobiles, Linux and copyright... and sometimes not.

Nokia's Linux phone -- the N900 -- has started shipping today. Here's an ad for it that you won't see on TV anytime soon.

Contrary to what you might think Nokia does indeed spend great gobs of money on marketing -- they just do it largely on the interwebs, where it's often harder to get noticed.

It may or may not help matters that the N900's key features aren't spelled out for you like you're some kind of mouth-breathing idiot, but rather embedded in a dramatic scenario that would be right at home in an episode of LOST.

So what do you think? Does this ad make the N900 a must-have, or does it just confuse the hell out of you?

I love it! But it *is* geek-to-geek advertising.

On TV, though? I do remember that Nokia had their name on street signs in downtown Buenos Ares when I was there in 2008...

Maybe I'm weird, but I'm not a fan of this "commercial". Not focused enough on the product, imo. The N97 ad though, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-lGckfV46I , was much, much better (again, in my opinion).

Yeah, that N97 spot is fairly awesome! Might you agree if I said that the N900 ad has a more European flair, while the N97 one is more unabashedly American?

Could be...the N97 spot just left me wanting to find out more about the phone--made me more interested in the product, where as the N900 ad just left me feeling "WTF?"...

I liked the commercial... more interesting than most of the stuff I see. But the real question is do you think they'll release a version that will work in Canada?? <fingers> C'mon Nokia!

You'll have to wait for the next Maemo device for that, unfortunately -- unless you want to make do with WiFi...
